Province looking for feedback on new OHS Act

The provincial government is looking for feedback from Albertans regarding the new Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The new act, which will go into place on June 1, will define harassment and violence in all of its forms, and will require joint work site health and safety committees or a worker health and safety representative, depending on workplace size. The input from Albertans will help shape the specific rules around the new requirements to ensure fair and balanced legislation.

“Creating a culture that prioritizes health and safety strengthens workplaces and our economy,” said Christina Gray, Minister of Labour, in a statement. “When workers feel protected, morale and productivity improve. I encourage everyone to share their views on how to make these new requirements work for all Albertans.”

When the act comes into effect, it will define harassment and violence in all its forms, including sexual and domestic violence. It will also require employers and supervisors to take reasonable steps to protect workers from harassment and violence and to investigate incidents and have an appeal process for workers disciplined for bringing harassment and violence issues forward.

Written submissions can be submitted by emailing lbr.review@gov.ab.ca. Submissions will be accepted until April 9.
